If you’re allergic to fragrance, perfumes and laundry detergents you might be worried about having a full blown reaction when travelling..the sheets, the towels, the toiletries..oh no!!!
Here are our top 5 tips for travelling with a fragrance allergy.
Write to your hotel or accommodation beforehand and ask them to accommodate.
A quick email to your accommodation to let them know one of your guests is allergic to fragrances in washing and cleaning products and to request a fragrance free option for linens/towels, can go a long way.
We've tried this a few times and almost every time places have been able to accommodate. If they can't find the right product for you you can also suggest:
- cleaning with boiling water and vinegar only
- a double rinse for the sheets and towels
Depending on the country you might need to swap out the word "fragrance" for "aroma" or "parfum".
Take a sleeping bag liner and pillow case to protect your skin.
If you’re unsure if your accommodation can help when it comes to the linen, take a backup travel towel and purchase a sleeping bag liner for your bed (online or at your local travel store). We recommend those made of a silk cotton blend. This might sound ridiculous but for piece of mind, this is seriously a no brainer. They dry quickly, are super light and easy to pack.
A couple of recommendations here:
- Chasbren Bamboo Travel Sheet (Amazon) - this nice and large but does take time to dry
- Sea to Summit Silk Cotton Blend Sheet (Amazon) - great when you need to wash often and don't have a lot of space in your suitcase.
Hard cased cosmetics bags are life savers.
We’re betting you need to bring a whole lot of toiletries with you. This mouv hard case cosmetics bag has been an ABSOLUTE winner for travelling. Grab something similar here on Amazon and stock up on laundry detergent, shampoos, hand soaps and all that jazz using small travel bottles to hold them.
If you’re carrying 100ml bottles of detergent on board your flight - make sure they are carry on approved.
All airports have different regulations, however most of them need to know any liquids you’re carrying are 100ml or under with proper labelling. For example these travel bottles for toiletries on Amazon are a yes, these on are a no because they don't have labels or measurements. Make sure you label what's in there too. Some airports prefer official labels like "shampoo" etc.
If you don't take carry on approved bottles, you run the risk of airport security throwing your much needed product in the bin before you get on the plane.
Do your research beforehand on local brands available.
